Bakst Wins Mid-Amateur Championship
DALLAS -- Ken Bakst birdied the 18th hole Friday
with a seven-iron shot to within four feet of the cup to
defeat Rick Stimmel and win the 1997 U.S. Mid-Amateur
championship at the Dallas Athletic Club.
Bakst, 39, of New York rallied from a two-hole deficit at the
turn by shooting 4-under par for the last 11 holes. The two
golfers came to the last hole tied and both put their drives
in the fairway. Bakst went first from 153 yards and
knocked his shot four feet below the hole. Stimmel was 25
feet out and when he missed his birdie try; Bakst had only
a short tap-in for victory.
"How about that," Bakst said after hugging his caddie,
Stimmel and two rules officials. "I just told myself, 'Keep
playing, keep making good swings."'
It was the first national amateur victory for Bakst, a real
estate developer, who captained the 1980 Stanford
University golf team. He won the Robert T. Jones Memorial
Trophy and a likely invitation to play in the 1998 Masters
golf tournament in Augusta, Ga.
"I was out there competing and that thought about the
Masters kept creeping into my head," Bakst said. "I thought
if I didn't win this one here, I didn't deserve to go."
Stimmel, 30, owns a window cleaning company in his
hometown of Allison Park, Pa., outside of Pittsburgh. He
said he couldn't do enough on the back nine to hold off the
Bakst rally.
"He just kept hitting good shots. I didn't think I would get to
18 with him. I thought he would close me out sooner,"
Stimmel said
He birdied the third hole and Bakst bogeyed No. 7 to give
Stimmel the early lead. Bakst birdied the 13th and 14th
holes to square the match.
The two traded pars for three holes, leaving the match to
be won on the par-4 18th hole, or forcing only the second
extra hole final in Mid-Am history.
"I felt the wind coming up against me, so I just wanted to
hit a soft seven (iron) for a short putt," Bakst said.
With the pressure on Stimmel, he could only get his ball
on the far left side of the putting green and didn't hit his
birdie effort close.
Both players defeated former champions to advance to the
final. Bakst knocked off 1994 winner Tim Jackson 1-up in
the semifinals while Stimmel defeated 1995 winner Jerry
Courville Jr. 6 and 5 in the other semifinal.
Courville eliminates Grace in Mid-Am as rally sputters
DALLAS (AP) -- Rick Stimmel and Ken Bakst beat
former national champions on Wednesday to advance
to the finals of the 1997 U.S. Mid-Amateur
championship.
Bakst, of New York, downed 1995 Mid-Am champion
Robert Jackson of Germantown, Tenn., 1-up in a
semifinal match.
Stimmel, of Allison Park, Pa., beat 1994 champion
Jerry Courville of Millford, Conn., 6 and 5.
The winner of Thursday's 18-hole final will likely be
invited to play in the Masters next year.
Stimmel, 30, said he had extra motivation after
overhearing Courville talking about him on Monday.
"I couldn't believe he was standing there bad-mouthing
me and he didn't even know me," Stimmel said. "I just
know I wanted to beat him and I wanted to beat him
bad."
Stimmel said he introduced himself to Courville after
the incident and talked with him again as they began
play Wednesday.
"I just said, 'I know we didn't get off to a good start, but
let's have a fun day,"' Stimmel said. "The beauty of this
thing is that I beat him. Maybe the next time he starts to
talk about somebody, he'll get his facts straight."
Bakst, 39, who captained the Stanford golf team in
1980, rolled in birdie and eagle putts of 50 feet and 30
feet, respectively, on the first 13 holes to build a big
lead over Jackson and hold on for the win.
"It's a dream to advance this far in match play. I've
played well and had some good breaks," he said.
Fort Worth golfer regains composure, holds 2-up lead
Dallas, Texas - Tim Jackson, 38, of Germantown, Tenn., won two matches Tuesday to advance to the quarterfinal round of the 1997 U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship at Dallas Athletic Club.
In the morning round, Jackson, the 1994 U.S. Mid-Amateur champion, defeated Jerry Guidl of Plymouth, Minn., 4 and 3. In the afternoon match, he won the 16th, 17th and 18th holes to rally from an early four-hole deficit to defeat Rick Ehrmanntraut of St. Paul, Minn., 1 up.
"I just didn't hit any good shots early in the afternoon," said Jackson, who was also a member of the 1995 U.S. Walker Cup team. "Consequently, I found myself down in a hurry. I made several mental errors, but I slowly began to chip away. My perseverance made the difference."
The hottest player of the day was Kenneth Bakst of New York, N.Y. He played the front nine of his morning match in the equivalent of 7-under-par 29 against Richard Smith of Dresden, Tenn., and ultimately won 6 and 4. In afternoon action, he faced Kevin Fairfield of Roswell, Ga., and won 2 up.
"Man I was on a roll this morning," said Bakst, who had seven consecutive threes to go with two fours in the first nine holes of his morning round. "It was like I knew where every putt was going to break, and everything went in. This afternoon was a different story. I had trouble reading every green, and nothing wanted to fall. But that's golf."
Medalist Bert Atkinson of Charleston, S.C., made an early exit in Tuesday's second round, losing to Bill McGuinness, a 38-year-old funeral director from Woodbury, N.J., 3 and 2. In the 17-year history of the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship, the stroke-play medalist has never won the title.
"It's the medalist curse," said Atkinson, the 1991 Mid-Amateur runner-up whose stroke-play performance broke or tied several USGA records. "This was probably my worst round of golf this year. My putting and short game were okay, but I couldn't hit a solid iron shot worth a darn."
Former champion Jerry Courville Jr. (1995) of Milford, Conn., also advanced to the quarterfinals. Like Jackson, he is a U.S. Walker Cup team veteran, playing on the 1995 and 1997 squads.
Tuesday's play was affected by a 1 hour, 32 minute rain and lightening delay. Play was halted at 12:02 p.m. CDT, and the backup caused officials to suspend the last match due to darkness. John Grace of nearby Fort Worth, leads Joel Hirsch of Chicago, Ill., 2 up with three holes to play. They will resume their match on Wednesday morning.
Wednesday's play will include both the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds, with the 18-hole championship match scheduled for Thursday morning. The U.S. Mid-Amateur is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association. Ten of those championships are conducted strictly for amateur golfers.

PAST CHAMPIONS COURVILLE AND JACKSON ADVANCE AT U.S. MID-AMATEUR
Dallas, Texas - Former champions Jerry Courville Jr. and Tim Jackson advanced, but defending champion "Spider" Miller lost in extra holes in the first round of match play Monday at the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship at the Dallas Athletic Club.
Jackson, the 1994 winner from Germantown, Tenn., managed to get by Jeff Kern of Tucson, Ariz., 1 up., and Courville, the 1995 winner from Milford, Conn., rallied on the final holes to beat Kelly Miller of Southern Pines, N.C., 1 up.
Joel Hirsch of Chicago, Ill., birdied the first extra hole to upset Miller.
"It's a lot of fun to be an old tiger at age 56 and win a tough match like this," said Hirsch, a former Senior British Amateur and USGA Senior Amateur runner-up. "I get satisfaction at being here with these young guys. I'm proud that I can still play with the younger guys."
Play continues in this age 25-and-over Championship Tuesday with the second and third rounds of match play, leading to the championship final match on Thursday. The U.S. Mid-Amateur is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.
Among the other 29 players to advance to Tuesday's second round of match play was former U.S. Amateur champion Buddy Alexander (1986) of Gainesville, Fla., who won four consecutive holes on the front nine and defeated Michael Kelley of Westerville, Ohio, 4 and 2.
Rick Stimmel of Allison Park, Pa., advanced with the best round of the day, making seven birdies in 12 holes to close out Brendan Hester of Worcester, Mass., 7 and 6.
And the longest match of the day went 26 holes before Thomas Fallon of Sandy Hook, N.J., outlasted Michael McCarthy of Bethesda, Md., with a concession birdie 3 on the last hole.
"This was the greatest match of my life," said Fallon, a 30-year-old restaurant waiter. "I will never forget this match. I'm exhausted, but I am looking forward to tomorrow."
Three past champions did not advance. In addition to Miller, two-time champion Jim Stuart (1990 and 1991) of Macon, Ga., lost to Robert Gerwin of Cincinati, Ohio, and Danny Yates (1992) of Atlanta, Ga., lost to Michael Hughett of Owasso, Okla.
