Among the many works available in our bookstore by Texas authors is Golf on $30 a Day or Less by Jim Apfelbaum. The core of the information-packed book is a state by state listing of the most affordable US courses. Each state has a local knowledge section where golf writers from the area give their course recommendations and reviews. Other local information resources and tidbits are included. More entertaining were the sections on equipment and accessories. Here, the golf thriftmeister lists numerous, unique creative ways of saving money in an often comedic style. Apfelbaum on .... three best days to play golf - "Super Bowl Sunday, Easter, and Mother’s Day. I didn't say it was going to be easy." using x-outs - "social ostracism aside, the savings clearly outweigh any risks." However avoid the experienced balls filling fishbowls of golf shop counters because of their uncertain heritage. paper triangle drinking cups - "This may sound ridiculous, but carry your own (collapsible) cup." However he warns against being provisioned like a 49er. "This is golf, not prospecting." Dave Pelz - "You can pay $2500 to attend his school, or cull the benefits of his research on putter-head stability for ten cents - by taping two nickels on either side of your putter’s sweetspot." Golf Pencils - "Millions are MIA, desk-drawered, glove-compartmented and golf- bagged in obscurity. This unplanned obsolescence has got to end." He proposes a national effort for pencil renewal and liberation, National Golf Pencil Amnesty Day! Apfelbaum, the editor and publisher of Bottom $ Golf,
The Consumer Value Golf Guide, also hosts a
radio golf show each Saturday on KVET in Austin in addition

How bout a wild Texas golf western? Fast Greens by Turk Pipkin brings together hustlers, gamblers, and liars in west Texas during the mid 1960’s. We follow the story of a teenage caddie who gets caught in the middle of a deadly grudge match, and we pick up his story in Part II, 25 years later. The novel is pure Texan and full of memorable one-liners. Expect to see the exploits of March and Roscoe at a theater near you in the future.

They Played with a Quiet Mind is an excellent overlooked manual on the mental side of golf by Charles F. Kemp. The author explains how the greats have been able to obtain a quiet mind, using both golf and real-life examples, then examines their qualities of character. Kemp also shares quotes and insights from some of the
world’s greatest thinkers in his "Wisdom of the World" which
are combined with the "Wisdom from the Fairways." Also included
are two conversations with Roland Harper, former head professional at Colonial CC.
